PRESS RELEASE
In reaction to the publication of the HIS Prevalence Survey of Healthcare-associated Infection in UK and Irish Acute Hospitals: Irish Hospital Prevalence rates; I would like to draw attention to the following:
Although the results of this survey are being taken as a comprehensive picture of ‘health care acquired’ infections in Ireland not all hospitals were surveyed, not all patients were surveyed in the hospitals included, and of course no nursing homes or other institutions appear in the research and have never been examined in this way. MRSA and Family Network central council members have just returned from a trip to Holland. The purpose of the visit was to see at first hand the ‘Search and Destroy’ policy which is operated by hospitals in Holland. This system has ensured that the level of Hospital Acquired Infections in Holland bears very little resemblance to the situation in Ireland where MRSA has recently been described by an eminent physician as endemic in our hospitals.
